Ask The Expert:

Here’s What to Wear for Three Occasions, Direct From a Top Stylist

At TPS we like to not only help prepare your event, but we also want to help prepare you for the event.  We chatted with Kim Apodaca, fashion stylist and founder of Recharge Your Style, to get her best tips for what to wear for three common occasions: a kid’s party, a cocktail party and, of course work!

A Kid’s Party

“When I dress someone, it’s very important to focus exactly on how they would like to feel in their clothes,” explains Kim.  “The clothes we wear give a much bigger impression than we realize and, frankly, tell a much bigger story of who we are and the energy we exude.” A child’s party tends to be full of high energy and extremely busy so Kim tends to recommend pastel and neutral colors, which exude a sense of calm; those colors also calm our senses when everything around a person is chaotic.

For Dena, she chose a blush pink ruffle sleeve from A World Curated, with Dena’s favorite pair of James Jeans and Louis Vuitton heels.  “You don’t have to wear heels, but Dena feels pretty in heels and it is so important that we don’t lose that sense of ourselves around our children.”

Work to Evening

According to Kim, “getting dressed for work is truly vital and sets a tone for your day.” Your personal style really is about showcasing yourself the way you want people to see you. “So, if there is an opportunity to make a great impression, why not use it?” Kim also suggests thinking about what your main goals are for your job. “For example, Dena’s day consists of meeting clients, which means she needs to exude a sense of confidence and style. She also needs to be heard, and she needs to feel good about herself since she is meeting people all day.”

For Dena, Kim chose a stylish green blouse that gave Dena a sense of presence and confidence. “These black pants from A World Curated are my favorite. They are joggers with a lace cut out up the side of the leg. The lace cut out is safe and not too revealing, so they are the perfect pair of pants to go from work to play.”

A Cocktail Party

“Typically, at a cocktail party you are wearing knee length or an above-the-knee dress,” explains Kim. “However, these days, I find that cocktail wear differs from city to city, so it isn’t as one-dimensional as it used to be. This is where we can take advantage of the circumstances, and wear what you feel best in, even if it is a jump suit or a simple little black dress.” Kim also goes on to explain that dress code is about being respectful to the host of the event you’re attending. “If you show support of the dress code by making a solid creative effort in your attire, then you will be ‘fine’, in every sense of the word.”

“Here, Dena is dressed for a gala. I LOVE this skirt from Balenciaga coupled with a soft lace camisole from A World Curated. I can’t live without my camisoles, because I wear them as tops as well as layered pieces under shirts and tops.  They add a wonderful feminine detail to every outfit. I have fun mixing couture with simple pieces; for me it adds dimension and interest.”  That said, Kim makes note that one of her biggest fashion pet peeves is seeing a woman dressed for a formal event with a big “day” handbag.  “Please make sure you invest in at least one clutch handbag.  All you need is your phone and a lipstick and you are good to go.”
